Signs and Symbols

More complex repeating and growing patterns are explored leading to writing general rules to find elements in the nth position. Equations are used to represent relationships. Letters or symbols are used to represent unknowns. Functional relationships are investigated. Change over time data is collected. Data displays include tally tables, line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs. The mean is introduced and used to analyze data along with range, mode, and median. Writing about mathematical thinking is an integral part of the lessons.
